The Dallas Cowboys and Haircuts

Many of you who know me also know that I happen to be a huge Dallas Cowboys fan.  I have been a Cowboys fan all of my life and I have been with them from the 1-15 season, through 3 Super Bowls in the 1990’s, a Thanksgiving day game (which is a Cowboys tradition to play at home on Turkey Day), to the botched field goal in last year’s playoff game against Seattle (which my wife still gives me heck about).

Nonetheless, I am loyal to the team and will be there through the years because it is simply all that I know when it comes to professional football.  It’s just the way it is. Now that the ‘boys are 9-1, all of us fans have new reason to think that the glory days are swinging back around and there is hope for another Super Bowl appearance (this would make 9, the most ever in NFL history—by the way).

Now, many of you also know that I have a young son.  One that was born quite large and, as you might expect, I have football aspirations for him.  By default, and largely through lack of choice, he will also be a Cowboys fan, for as for me and my house, we will watch the Cowboys.

But, if he decides in his life to be a fan of any other team other than the Cowboys (the Eagles, Giants, and Redskins do not count), he is most welcome. However, I will not sanction the shaving of his head to resemble to famous star of the Cowboys!

What are people doing to their children?  A kindergartner in the Birdville ISD in the Dallas/Fort Worth area (the place we call the mid-cities) had his hair shaved into a star to support the Cowboys and intends to leave it that way till they lose a game. (please note, the Cowboys have already lost 1 game so this must have come after the loss to the Patriots about a month ago).

The Star in Question

The elementary school that the child attends has told the parents that the child cannot come back to school till the star is gone.  The parents have, of course, refused and are opting to keep their child home and suspended instead of providing for their child an education. The dad of the child said that he has tried to contact the school for assistance and can’t get through.

Now, from an administration stand point, barring any dress code violations the kid might be breaking, I would site the clause that every school district that I know of has adopted that says, in a nutshell, that kids can’t do anything that disrupts the learning process.  This star apparently disrupts the learning process–at least that is what the Birdville ISD spokesperson said.

I blame both parties here.  I blame the parents for doing something very stupid to their child which ultimately led to the kid missing about 3 days of school in support of a football team.  I blame the school district for letting something as dumb as a haircut get in the way of educating a child by suspending him.  Yes, we have to have rules and dress code, etc…but, they could have kept the kid in school (perhaps ISS?).

Now, in my efforts to find the story for you, I found another haircut story out of Houston where a child was suspended for having one of those popular “fauxhawks” shaved into his head.  The dad says that his son’s haircut is no different than the high top fade he wore when he was in school.

What do you think of all this haircut junk?

Wow. Don’t we have enough problems in our schools??? Kids need all the educational time they can get – this is just stupid, suspending them for haircuts.
